Welcome to Protocol.ART, the web3 ecosystem powered by .ART Domains. In this documentation, we will introduce you to the key features and benefits of Protocol.ART, and explain how you can use it to streamline your digital identity on the web3 space.

At Protocol.ART, we believe that innovation is all about understanding that what seems confusing at first is often just a new version of what we already know. To that end, we are breaking down the walls between web2 and web3 with the help of our amazing partners. By using, registering, and trading .ART domains on Ethereum, you can take advantage of the full potential of the web3 ecosystem.

Connecting Web2 and Web3

The rollout of Protocol.ART begins with the integration of Ethereum Name Service (ENS), which allows members of the .ART community to go beyond their standard DNS domain and streamline their digital identity to the web3 space. These one-of-a-kind domains can be minted as NFTs to hold or trade on the open market. With Protocol.ART, even existing .art web domains can be used on Ethereum.

The second phase of Protocol.ART will focus on the distribution of governance tokens to DNS and ENS .ART holders. The governance is centered around a voting-based system inspired by the DAO model.

Roadmap

An upcoming airdrop of the tokens will distribute the governance among 230,000+ .ART DNS and future ENS .ART owners. The distribution of the tokens will allow our diverse, creative, and artistic community to shape the future of the ecosystem.

In the following sections, we will provide detailed instructions on how to use Protocol.ART, as well as answers to frequently asked questions. Whether you're a seasoned web3 user or a newcomer to the space, we hope that this documentation will help you get the most out of Protocol.ART.

# Ethereum Name Service

Ethereum Name Service (ENS) is a decentralized system that allows users to associate human-readable names with Ethereum addresses. It is built on top of the Ethereum blockchain and operates as a decentralized autonomous organization (DAO).

ENS is important because it makes it easier for users to interact with the Ethereum network and reduces the risk of sending money to the wrong address. Instead of using a long and confusing string of numbers and letters (e.g. 0x1234567890abcdef) to represent an Ethereum address, users can use a simple and easy-to-remember name like "mywallet.eth" or "mywallet.art". This simplifies the process of identifying and interacting with Ethereum addresses, and it also increases the security and trustworthiness of these interactions.

It is important for top-level domains (TLDs) such as .ART to join ENS because it increases the usability and accessibility of the Ethereum network for users. For example, if users can register and use their DNS domains with ENS, it will make it easier for them to identify and interact with Ethereum addresses on these domains. This will also increase the security and trustworthiness of these interactions, as users will be able to verify that they are interacting with the correct Ethereum address using the corresponding ENS name.

In summary, ENS is a decentralized system that allows users to associate human-readable names with Ethereum addresses, and it is important for TLDs to join ENS because it increases the usability and accessibility of the Ethereum network for users.

Please visit [ENS documentation](https://docs.ens.domains/) for [FAQ](https://docs.ens.domains/frequently-asked-questions).

# .ART: Ethereum Name Service

In the decentralized and blockchain-based world of web3, it is crucial for individuals and organizations to own and control their own identities. This not only gives them control over their online presence but also enables them to securely and seamlessly interact with various decentralized applications and services.

One way to achieve this is through the integration of a Domain Name System (DNS) and Ethereum Name Service (ENS). DNS is a centralized system that translates human-readable domain names (e.g. google.com) into numerical IP addresses that computers can understand. ENS is a decentralized system that allows users to associate human-readable names with Ethereum addresses.

Metamask

By integrating DNS and ENS, users can streamline their identity across various online platforms and applications. For example, a user can use the same human-readable name (e.g. "myname.art") for their website, email, wallet, and decentralized applications. This not only simplifies the process of identifying and interacting with a user or organization, but also increases the security and trustworthiness of these interactions.

Furthermore, the integration of DNS and ENS opens up new opportunities for branding and project management in the web3 world. Creators and organizations can use their own custom .ART domains to represent their brand and projects, and use ENS to securely and easily manage these assets. This allows them to establish a strong and easily recognizable online presence, and to securely and seamlessly interact with various decentralized applications and services.

Opensea

The integration of DNS and ENS also has the potential to revolutionize the way we think about and use online identities. In the traditional centralized web, users often have to create and manage multiple identities for different platforms and services, and these identities are often siloed and disconnected from each other. This can be confusing and inconvenient for users, and it also increases the risk of identity fraud and other security threats.

In contrast, the integration of DNS and ENS allows users to create and manage a single, decentralized identity that they can use across various online platforms and applications. This not only simplifies the process of interacting with these platforms and applications, but also increases the security and trustworthiness of these interactions.

For example, a user can use their .ART domain and ENS name to represent their identity on a decentralized exchange, a smart contract platform, and a decentralized social media platform. This allows them to establish a consistent and recognizable online presence, and to securely and easily interact with these platforms and applications using the same identity.

In addition, the integration of DNS and ENS also enables organizations and projects to more effectively manage their online presence and assets. For example, an organization can use its .ART domain and ENS name to represent its brand and projects, and use ENS to securely and easily manage these assets. This allows the organization to establish a strong and easily recognizable online presence, and to securely and seamlessly interact with various decentralized applications and services.

# .ART: All about ENS mint

Minting .art names can differ from traditional ENS domain name registration in several ways; one way it's the process of integrating DNS into the ENS and parallel use, and the second way is its use as ENS names in the Ethereum network without DNS. Integrating DNS into ENS in its turn can be done in two ways - minting a non-transferable NFT or employ a gasless offchain resolver. Pros and cons of both ways are described below.

## Register ENS without using a DNS domain.

You will be able to mint emojis combinations with Latin letters (A-Z), digits (0-9), and hyphens (-) to create unique ENS .ART names on Protocol.ART.

Use the emoji keyboard and special character keyboard to search for available ENS .ART names. We are constantly working to include more characters and introduce new possibilities for your web3 identity.

ENS .ART names minted as NFTs are transferable and tradable.

ENS renewal

#### To renew an ENS (Ethereum Name Service) domain name, you need to follow these steps:

1. Visit the [Protocol.ART](https://app.protocol.art/) website and click on the "Connect wallet" button on the main menu.
2. Click on your wallet address.
3. Click on "view" next to the desired ens domain, after click on "renew" button.
4. Select the duration for which you want to renew the domain name. .ART ENS domain names can be renewed for unlimited time
5. Confirm the renewal by paying the required fee in Ether (ETH). The fee will vary depending on the duration of the renewal and the current gas price on the Ethereum network.
6. Wait for the transaction to be confirmed on the Ethereum network. Once the transaction is confirmed, your ENS domain name will be renewed for the selected duration.

\*It is important to renew your ENS domain name before it expires to prevent losing ownership of the domain name. If your ENS domain name expires and someone else registers it, you will need to bid for it again in a new auction process to regain ownership. Therefore, it is recommended to renew your domain name in advance to avoid any potential issues.

</details>

## Register ENS with DNS domain.

#### Minting a non-transferable domain NFT

To use DNS integration with ENS, you will need to follow a few simple steps, including registering your .ART domain with a domain registrar, configuring a "TXT Record" in your DNS records to point to your ENS domain and verifying your ownership of the domain. Once these steps are complete, you will be able to mint your ENS .art domain to interact with decentralized applications and smart contracts on the Ethereum blockchain.

Registrar or where you can buy .ART domain

When choosing a domain registrar, it is important to consider factors such as pricing, customer support, domain management tools, and security features. It is also a good idea to compare the prices and features of different registrars to find the best deal for your needs. Once you have chosen a domain registrar, you can search for available domain names and purchase them through their website.

<details>

Domain pricing

#### What is the price of a typical (standard) .ART domain?

Pricing is set by the individual ICANN-accredited registrars from whom you will obtain your .ART domain. Based on our observations of the market, we believe that a typical one-year registration fee will be $15 – 25 for a standard domain.

Annual renewal fees should be priced about the same.

.ART also offers .ART Inventory names (or premium names) that are described below.

VAT may be applicable in addition depending on where you are located, if you are a business, and other factors.

#### What are premium names?

Premium names are generic words or word combinations that are more highly sought-after because they might be: related to the artistic industry, short, memorable, or valuable in some other way. These names might have a predicted value that is greater than the domain name standard price. Using sophisticated analytics, .ART established an inventory of names with a predicted value that is greater than the standard price. These names have been placed in a special .ART Inventory of Names and Word combinations (further on – .ART Names Inventory).

**ENS and DNS names are related, but in this case you need to renew your DNS name to be able to use ENS**

#### To renew your DNS domain, you need to follow these steps:

1. Log in to the account of the domain registrar where you registered your domain name.
2. Look for the domain renewal option. This may be under the domain management, billing, or account settings menu.
3. Select the duration for which you want to renew the domain name. Domain names can typically be renewed for up to 10 years at a time.
4. Confirm the renewal by paying the required fee. The fee will vary depending on the duration of the renewal and the policies of your domain registrar.
5. Wait for the domain renewal to be processed. This may take a few minutes or up to 48 hours, depending on the domain registrar and the domain's DNS configuration.
6. Verify that the domain has been renewed. You can check the domain status and expiration date in the domain management section of your registrar account or by performing a WHOIS lookup.

It is important to renew your domain name before it expires to prevent losing ownership of the domain. If your domain name expires and someone else registers it, you may need to pay a higher price or go through a legal dispute to regain ownership. Therefore, it is recommended to set up automatic renewal or to renew your domain name in advance to avoid any potential issues.

</details>

{% hint style="info" %}
It's important to note that DNS-enabled ENSes are currently not transferable, meaning that the person who owns the .ART domain also owns the associated NFT. Additionally, NFTs that are minted from DNS .ART domains cannot be traded. They are meant to be used as unique identifiers for the .ART domains they represent.
{% endhint %}

#### Employ a gasless offchain resolver

If you're not particularly interested in having the ENS NFT in your wallet, but appreciate the benefits of an easy-to-remember and user-friendly wallet address, we offer an alternative. You can obtain the same ENS domain without incurring any cost. To do this, simply create a gasless ENS domain from your existing DNS domain by adding a TXT record to your domain name zone. This way, you get to enjoy the same benefits without the associated costs. The service is completely free for all .ART DNS domain owners.

# Tokens and Airdrop

Governance tokens will be airdropped to verified ENS and DNS .ART holder

> THE TOKEN IS NOT LAUNCHED YET. BEWARE OF SCAMMERS IMPERSONALIZING PROTOCOL.ART. TOKEN LAUNCH DATE AND SMART CONTRACT ADDRESS TO BE ANNOUNCED LATER

The Protocol.ART smart contract requires art network participants to vote on proposals that are presented on the platform. Each proposal will be voted on by all members of the system.

For example, a portion of the pool will be used for curating art and also for voting on proposals for major dates, performances or other similar events. Use of the protocol’s reserves will be allocated by the decision of our community. In essence, a group of people who have a vested interest in supporting the arts and allowing new people to experience it firsthand will be deciding how funds will be used.

### How to be Eligible for Token Airdrop?

To be eligible for the airdrop, you must own at least one DNS .ART domain or one ENS .ART name when the snapshot is taken for the airdrop. The airdrop distribution date will be announced soon.

Before the airdrop, you can still register new, sell, or transfer .ART names between wallets or registrants.

DNS .ART domains that expire in less than 3 months after the airdrop are NOT eligible. Please be sure to renew these domains before the snapshot to receive the token airdrop.

Expired DNS .ART domains and DNS .ART domains in grace periods are automatically excluded from the airdrop.

### How Many Tokens Will Each Holder Get?

The tiers of DNS and ENS .ART names determine the amount of tokens .ART holders receive in the airdrop.

Holders of standard DNS .ART domains and ENS .ART names with 5+ characters will receive the minimum of 20 tokens.

#### DNS .ART Tiers

# Roadmap

#### DNS Name Support

This feature allows for the integration and support of traditional DNS (Domain Name System) names into the platform. This means users will be able to manage and use conventional domain names within the blockchain-based system.

#### ccIP Resolver

The ccIP (Content and Identity over IP) resolver is a crucial component for looking up and mapping domain names to blockchain addresses. The resolver makes it easier to navigate and interact with domains and subdomains on the network.

#### ccIP Records Update

This refers to the capability to update or modify ccIP records associated with a domain name. It gives the domain owners the flexibility to change the blockchain address that their domain points to, among other settings.

#### ccIP Subdomain

This milestone includes support for creating and managing ccIP subdomains. Subdomains are subdivisions of the primary domain and can be used to organize and navigate different sections or services within the main domain.

#### Account Abstraction

Account abstraction simplifies the interaction between the user's wallet and the network. Instead of dealing with complex public-private key pairs, the user can interact with the network using a simple, human-readable name, significantly enhancing the user experience.

#### Fiat Payment

This is the integration of traditional fiat (currency issued by a government) payment methods into the system. This feature enables users who do not have cryptocurrency to also participate and perform transactions.

#### Tokengated Subdomains

Tokengated subdomains are an innovative feature where access to certain subdomains is restricted to holders of specific tokens. This could be used to create premium or exclusive sections of a domain only accessible to certain members of a community.

#### ccIP Gasless Import

Gasless import would allow users to import their ccIP records to the platform without incurring any 'gas' costs. 'Gas' in this context refers to the transaction fees in a blockchain network. Reducing these costs can make the platform more accessible and user-friendly.

# How to mint Emoji ENS

Minting is the foundational process for generating a new non-fungible token (NFT). By definition, an NFT is a unique digital asset that signifies the ownership of an individual item or entity, which can range from artwork, collectibles, to domain names.

The following guide outlines the steps to mint a .art domain name using ENS (Ethereum Name Service) on the platform protocol.art:

### Step 1: Connect Your Wallet

# Linking Your DNS Domain to ENS

Following the process of minting your .art domain, the subsequent step is to link your DNS (Domain Name System) domain to the Ethereum Name Service (ENS). This guide will lead you through the necessary steps:

### Step 1: Connect Your Wallet

First, navigate to the mint page on protocol.art and connect your wallet. This wallet connection will facilitate digital transactions for minting the ENS from your DNS.

### Step 2: Search for Your Domain

Once your wallet is connected, input the .art domain name you previously purchased into the search engine.

### Step 3: Alter the "TXT Record"

Upon locating your domain, an information window (Host/Value) will open. At this stage, you will need to alter the "TXT record" in your domain settings, specifically on the website where you originally purchased the domain. This change is critical for minting your ENS.

To adjust the "TXT Record", follow the guide below:

1. Identify the platform where you acquired the .art domain.
2. Refer to the instructions provided for that specific platform.

{% hint style="info" %}
The process of changing the "TXT Record" varies depending on the platform, so following the specific instructions for your chosen platform is key to correctly making the alterations.
{% endhint %}

Once you have correctly modified the "TXT Record", you will be able to mint your ENS from your DNS successfully. Congratulations on expanding your digital portfolio! 🎉

# How to obtain gasless .ART ENS domain

The only thing must be done is to edit your domain name DNS zone and add one or more TXT records into it. The proccess of editing the zone depends on DNS provider supporting your domain name. Often the domain name registrar is the DNS provider.

### Link DNS name to Ethereum address

To link your .ART domain name to a Ethereum address - your wallet or any smart contract - add a TXT record into the domain name DNS zone. The name (host) for the record is "@" if you wish to link your domain name or any subhost name ("vault" for example) if you wish to link a subdomain (vault.yourname.art for example).

The value of the record is "`ENS a=60;<eth-address>`".

<details>

Examples

To link **yourdomain.art** to ethereum address 0x748c694aCEc977F4e1C98247c9895EDAa2d9a0fe add the TXT record

```
Name: "@"
Value: "ENS a=60;0x748c694aCEc977F4e1C98247c9895EDAa2d9a0fe"
```

To link **sub.yourdomain.art** to ethereum address 0x748c694aCEc977F4e1C98247c9895EDAa2d9a0fe add the TXT record

```
Name: "sub"
Value: "ENS a=60;0x748c694aCEc977F4e1C98247c9895EDAa2d9a0fe"
```

</details>

### Link DNS name to other network addresses

**Step 1: find the network ID**

To link a domain name to an address for other blockchain network find to network ID in "coin type" field in the list here: <https://github.com/satoshilabs/slips/blob/master/slip-0044.md>

**Step 2: prepare the TXT record value**

Having the network ID and the address your TXT record value is:

```
ENS a=
;
```

For example, if you are linking a domain to bitcoin address 1yGPm5L9ONIfwHSM94ytt1prBprxYrzfM2 then the TXT record value is:

```
ENS a=1;1yGPm5L9ONIfwHSM94ytt1prBprxYrzfM2
```

**Step 3: add the record into your DNS domain zone**

Please see links above how to add a TXT record into the zone for most popular registrars. If your registrar is not in the list you can contact their support.
